The Supreme Court on Monday said it would not urgently hear a plea seeking immediate judicial action over the large number of IndiGo flight cancellations across the country. The court noted that the central government has already stepped in and is working to manage the situation. Chief Justice Surya Kant, heading the bench with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, said the issue is serious because lakhs of passengers are stuck at airports. He added that the government has taken timely steps, considering that many travellers may have health concerns or other important reasons to fly.
A lawyer raised the matter before the court, explaining that IndiGo has cancelled a huge number of flights over the past few days, causing major inconvenience for passengers. He said that most of the cancellations were not properly communicated to travellers and that nearly 2,500 flights have been delayed. According to him, people are facing difficulties at around 95 airports across the country as they wait for updates.
On Monday alone, nearly 300 IndiGo flights from Delhi and Bengaluru were cancelled as the airline continues to struggle with operational issues. IndiGo has been under pressure from both passengers and the government since December 2, when the cancellations began. The airline has blamed the disruptions on new regulatory changes linked to pilots’ duty hours and updated aviation norms. The delays and cancellations have left a very large number of passengers stranded nationwide, many waiting long hours for alternative arrangements.
Meanwhile, another similar petition regarding the cancellations has been filed in the Delhi High Court. That case is scheduled to be heard on December 10. The ongoing situation has sparked concern among travellers and raised questions about the stability of the aviation sector and the preparedness of airlines to handle sudden policy changes. As the disruptions continue, the matter remains under close watch by the government and regulatory bodies.
For now, the Supreme Court has made it clear that it will not intervene urgently, saying the authorities are already taking action. The issue continues to affect flyers across India, making it one of the biggest recent travel disruptions in the country.
