Syria Supports Diplomatic Security Agreement

Syria has said it wants to pursue a US backed security agreement with Israel while maintaining that it will not accept the occupation of Syrian territory. Syria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Abdulmalik Olabi, made the remarks during a United Nations Security Council meeting on the situation in the region.

Damascus Calls for Dialogue and Mediation

Olabi said Syria had chosen dialogue and mediation as a way to prevent further regional escalation. According to his statement, Damascus wants diplomatic efforts to continue and supports a security arrangement facilitated by the United States. He said such an agreement should not be interpreted as acceptance of territorial occupation or a surrender of Syrian rights.

Syria Accuses Israel of Military Escalation

During his address, Olabi accused Israel of undermining diplomatic efforts through military incursions and airstrikes. These allegations were presented by the Syrian government at the Security Council. Israel's military actions in Syria have remained a subject of international debate, while UN discussions have repeatedly addressed concerns about sovereignty, territorial integrity and the 1974 disengagement agreement.

Syria Highlights State Rebuilding Efforts

Olabi also described Syria's wider priorities following years of conflict. He said Damascus is focused on rebuilding state institutions, integrating military forces, combating Daesh and other militant groups, dismantling drug-smuggling networks and strengthening relations with neighboring countries. The UN has separately reported progress in Syria's political transition while emphasizing the need for stronger institutions, transitional justice and continued international support for recovery and reconstruction.

1974 Disengagement Agreement Remains Important

The security situation between Syria and Israel continues to be discussed in connection with the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement between Israeli and Syrian Forces. Recent UN discussions have called for negotiations, de-escalation, respect for Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity, and compliance with the existing framework.

Olabi urged countries in the region to focus on stability and development rather than further conflict. He presented Syria as a partner in regional security and said diplomatic engagement could provide an opportunity to reduce tensions. The United States has been involved in efforts related to security arrangements between Syria and Israel.
