Syria and SDF Reach Agreement to Ease Tensions Following Aleppo Clashes

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The Syrian government has struck an agreement with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) aimed at easing escalating tensions in Aleppo. This decision follows a violent episode that resulted in civilian casualties and widespread injury.

As per the reports from the state-run news agency, the army's leadership has instructed its troops to refrain from hitting SDF-controlled areas. Likewise, the SDF announced its fighters would cease retaliatory action following intervening discussions focussed on calming the unrest.

Health officials from Syria confirmed two civilian deaths stemming from the clashes, with additional injuries reported among children and emergency responders. Explosions rocked residential districts, compelling families to shelter indoors amidst the turmoil.

Both factions accused one another of inciting the clashes. Syrian officials claim the SDF initiated attacks on military personnel in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah districts, while the SDF countered, alleging those assaults were executed by government-affiliated armed entities, employing heavy artillery in populated zones.

Eyewitnesses relayed a distressing atmosphere, with residents continuously hearing cannon fire and observing heavy military deployments throughout the city. One resident described the explosions as deafening, inducing panic among local families.

This unrest ensued shortly after remarks from Turkey’s foreign minister, who criticized the SDF for not complying with a commitment to integrate into Syria's national military by the year's end. Turkey categorizes the SDF as a terror entity and has indicated potential military responses should the integration fail to materialize.

Integrating the SDF poses serious challenges for Syria, as the group wielded significant influence during the war while collaborating with the United States. Now, it governs significant territories in the northeast, including oil-rich regions and detention facilities housing Islamic State detainees. The SDF harbors concerns of losing its autonomy if it fully assimilates into government forces.

A breakdown in negotiations could reignite hostilities and potentially involve neighboring nations like Turkey, raising alarms that renewed clashes might negate progress achieved over the past 14 years of conflict.

In a precautionary measure, the governor of Aleppo has ordered that all educational institutions, including public and private schools, universities, and government facilities in the city center, close on Tuesday to ensure civilian safety and restore order.

Despite the glimmer of hope presented by the de-escalation agreement, the atmosphere remains unstable. Achieving enduring peace will necessitate trust, genuine dialogue, and constructive actions to resolve prolonged political and security challenges.
