Syria Issues Ultimatum to Kurdish Forces Amid US Support Withdrawal

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The Syrian government has passed a pivotal moment, issuing a four-day ultimatum to Kurdish-led forces for their integration into the national framework. This ultimatum aligns with a significant shift in U.S. support that appears to be waning. Collectively, these developments signal a transformative phase in Syria's landscape, especially following the regime change from former President Bashar al-Assad over a year ago.

On Tuesday, the government declared a ceasefire with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which will remain in effect for four days. Within this timeframe, the SDF is expected to present a plan to assimilate into Syria's core institutions. Should an agreement fail to materialize, state forces have indicated a potential advance into SDF-held territories in the northeast.

The SDF, predominantly composed of Kurdish fighters, has been a crucial ally of the U.S. in combating the Islamic State group. With American air support, it previously governed substantial areas of northeastern Syria. Recent developments, however, have shifted as Syrian government forces gained ground, compelling the SDF to retreat into predominantly Kurdish regions.

The U.S. has influenced these changes, with a senior envoy remarking that the primary rationale for supporting the SDF has diminished significantly. He characterized the integration proposal as a crucial opportunity for Kurds to secure citizenship rights, cultural recognition, and a share in political processes. He also confirmed there is no intention for a prolonged U.S. presence in Syria.

President Donald Trump has shown support for the new Syrian government, commending President Ahmed al-Sharaa for his initiatives. Trump mentioned discussions regarding Islamic State detainees held in northeastern Syria, affirming that although U.S. involvement is lessening, efforts to protect the Kurdish population will persist.

The ceasefire is set to commence Tuesday evening, during which the SDF must develop a plan for integration in Hasakah province. They are also required to nominate a candidate for a senior post in the defense ministry in Damascus. The government promised not to deploy its forces into Hasakah or Qamishli during this ceasefire.

Northeastern Syria is a notably sensitive region, inhabited by both Kurds and Arabs, bordering Turkey and Iraq. Turkey has historically opposed the leading Kurdish faction in the SDF, linking it to separatist movements in Turkey, thus heightening regional tensions.

Another pressing issue is the status of Islamic State detainees; numerous individuals tied to the group are held in SDF-secured facilities. The recent withdrawals of the SDF have led to escapes, with many detainees later recaptured by Syrian authorities, who now express readiness to assume control over these facilities.

Escalating clashes between the SDF and government forces followed the collapse of negotiations regarding the fate of SDF fighters and territorial control. Although the SDF has consented to withdraw from certain Arab-dominated areas, it retains control over critical mixed-population cities.

As this situation unfolds, Kurdish forces find themselves facing a complex decision. Agreeing to integration could entail losing military autonomy but potentially securing rights within Syria; rejecting the offer may escalate conflicts at a time of diminishing U.S. support.

As the deadline approaches, the decisions made during this period will be crucial in shaping the future of northeastern Syria, impacting the lives of its residents and the broader regional landscape concerning extremist threats.
