Taiwan has reaffirmed its resolve to protect its sovereignty following extensive military drills conducted by China around the island, including the launch of multiple rockets. President Lai Ching-te delivered this message during his New Year’s address, broadcast live from Taipei's presidential office.
In his speech, President Lai emphasized that the global community is watching to see if the Taiwanese people are determined to uphold their democratic system and lifestyle. He reiterated that his stance is unchanged since assuming office: Taiwan will defend its sovereignty and enhance its national defense.
China’s military exercises, dubbed “Justice Mission 2025,” were executed just prior to Lai’s speech, featuring significant naval and aerial activity along with rocket fire toward areas surrounding Taiwan. These were recorded as the most extensive drills near the island, prompting Taiwan to cancel several domestic flights and deploy its own jets and naval forces for monitoring.
Lai underlined that the drills highlight the urgent necessity for Taiwan to enhance its defensive abilities. He urged opposition parties in parliament to back his proposal for a $40 billion hike in defense spending, although the initiative faces obstacles due to the political impasse in the opposition-led legislature.
Describing 2026 as a pivotal year for Taiwan, Lai stated the island must prepare for any eventuality while remaining hopeful for peace. He noted Taiwan’s openness to dialogue with China, provided it is on equal and respectful terms. Lai asserted that peace could be achieved if China recognizes the Republic of China (Taiwan) and respects the people's choice to thrive in a democratic society.
China’s reaction to Lai’s address was swift, with a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office accusing him of misinformation targeting both Taiwanese people and the global community. Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping, in his New Year proclamation, reiterated that the goal of “reunification” with Taiwan remains steadfast.
Taipei characterized China's military drills as a pronounced threat to regional safety and a blatant provocation. Western allies, including the European Commission and the United Kingdom, shared their apprehensions regarding the maneuvers. Following the conclusion of the drills, China claimed it would maintain military readiness.
These activities come shortly after the United States unveiled a substantial $11.1 billion arms package for Taiwan. For the first time, China explicitly stated that the drills were intended to deter foreign intervention.
As tensions persist, Taiwan’s leadership is showcasing both determination and caution. The overarching message from Taipei is evident: while Taiwan favors peace and conversation, it remains resolute in safeguarding its sovereignty and democratic principles.
