Taiwan Remains Vigilant as China Reduces Military Presence

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Even with the withdrawal of Chinese warships and coast guard vessels, Taiwan is maintaining a state of high alert following extensive military exercises conducted by China. The series of drills, termed “Justice Mission 2025,” have sparked significant worries in Taiwan and the surrounding areas regarding regional stability and peace.

During these exercises, which involved fighter jets, rockets, and numerous naval and coast guard vessels, over 90 Chinese ships were reported near Taiwan, the South China Sea, and the East China Sea. Taiwan's defense ministry recorded the detection of 77 military aircraft and 25 vessels within a span of 24 hours, with at least 35 planes crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait, an unverified buffer meant to ease tensions.

Although there is a reduction in Chinese naval activities, Taiwan’s military and coast guard emergency response centers remain fully operational. Authorities emphasize the necessity of swift action should the situation escalate again. Taiwan also engaged in its own readiness drills, which included establishing barriers and deploying defensive assets at critical points.

The Taiwanese government has condemned China's maneuvers, labeling them a threat to security in the region and a blatant provocation. Officials assert that such military pressure heightens anxiety and uncertainty rather than fostering peace. As the drills occurred, flight cancellations were reported, with citizens closely monitoring developments.

Conversely, China justified its actions, claiming the drills were designed to safeguard national sovereignty and issued warnings against what it perceives as “Taiwan independence forces” and foreign meddling. Chinese officials have characterized the exercises as a stern warning, particularly in light of the recent approval of an $11.1 billion arms package for Taiwan by the United States.

Amidst mounting tensions, ambassadors from the Quad nations— the United States, India, Japan, and Australia— convened in Beijing. While specifics of the discussions were not disclosed, the meeting itself signals increasing global concern about security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Experts indicate that despite the escalation of China’s military posturing, a full-scale conflict appears unlikely as the costs would be prohibitively high. The situation, however, remains delicate. China considers Taiwan part of its territory, whereas Taiwan functions as a self-governing democracy.

While the withdrawal of Chinese ships has introduced a brief period of calm, Taiwan's continued state of readiness highlights a troubling reality: trust is minimal, tensions are elevated, and the chance for miscalculation persists. The approaching days will determine whether a constructive dialogue or further pressure will dictate the future of cross-strait relations.
