Tamil Nadu’s Drugs Control Department has cancelled the manufacturing license of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, the company behind Coldrif cough syrup. The decision came after the syrup was linked to at least 22 deaths in Madhya Pradesh and several others in Rajasthan. Authorities acted swiftly to prevent further casualties and to ensure public safety.
Toxic Chemical Found in Syrup
Investigations revealed that the syrup contained diethylene glycol (DEG), a highly toxic industrial chemical known to cause kidney failure and even death. Laboratory tests confirmed that Coldrif syrup had 48.6% DEG, indicating the use of unsafe ingredients likely to reduce production costs.
Regulatory Lapses and Plant Violations
The Kancheepuram plant of Sresan Pharma was found to have over 300 safety and regulatory violations. These included the use of non-pharmaceutical-grade chemicals and failure to comply with safety standards. Two senior drug inspectors were suspended for negligence, highlighting concerns over oversight in the state’s drug control system.
Arrests and Legal Action
The company’s owner, G. Ranganathan, aged 75, was arrested by a Madhya Pradesh Special Investigation Team on October 9 and remains in police custody. Enforcement agencies continue to investigate potential criminal negligence and the involvement of company officials in endangering public health.
Money-Laundering Investigation
The Enforcement Directorate conducted raids across seven locations in Chennai, including Ranganathan’s residence and offices of senior drug officials. The raids focus on money laundering under the PMLA, examining financial irregularities and possible collusion with regulatory authorities.
Political Reactions and Public Outcry
Political leaders have reacted strongly to the case. BJP Tamil Nadu president K. Annamalai criticized the DMK government for taking limited action, suspending only two officials despite the deaths of 23 people in Madhya Pradesh and three children in Rajasthan.
The case has raised nationwide concerns over drug safety, quality control, and regulatory compliance. Authorities continue to monitor pharmaceutical firms in Tamil Nadu to prevent similar incidents. Public awareness and stricter inspections are being emphasized to safeguard health and restore confidence in the industry.
