Thailand and Cambodia Engage in Military Discussions Aimed at Reviving Ceasefire

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Thailand and Cambodia are reinitiating military discussions to reinstate a ceasefire following weeks of intense conflict along their mutual border. These talks emerged after 16 days of violence that claimed the lives of at least 86 individuals and displaced countless others in both nations.

On December 25, high-ranking military personnel from both countries convened at a border checkpoint. Thailand’s defense ministry revealed that the General Border Committee meetings are set to span three days. Officials indicated that if discussions progress favorably, a formal agreement might be reached, potentially leading to a meeting between defense ministers later this week. Cambodia confirmed that the talks commenced in the afternoon, under the leadership of senior generals from each side.

These discussions are regarded as a significant step toward peace since the escalation of hostilities earlier this month. Thailand and Cambodia have a long-standing history of conflicts over certain border regions, with tensions persisting for decades. However, the current turmoil has dramatically impacted civilians.

The dialogue follows a special assembly of Southeast Asian foreign ministers held in Kuala Lumpur two days prior, aimed at salvaging a ceasefire agreement originally established in October. This truce, facilitated by ASEAN chair Malaysia and backed by the United States, involved commitments to troop reduction, removal of heavy weaponry, and commencement of demining in disputed territories.

Nevertheless, hostilities have persisted. Both nations blame each other for violating the ceasefire and initiating attacks. Clashes have erupted across various sectors of the 817-kilometer-long border, reaching from forested areas near Laos to coastal provinces by the Gulf of Thailand.

Tragically, the impact on civilians has been severe. Cambodian officials report that at least 21 civilians have lost their lives, with over 500,000 displaced. In Thailand, officials indicated that around 65 deaths have occurred, accompanied by the evacuation of over 150,000 residents from border regions. Many families are currently residing in temporary shelters, waiting for the violence to cease.

This situation has garnered international attention, with the United States expressing concern over the ongoing fighting and rising death toll. A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department urged both nations to halt hostilities immediately, prioritize civilian protection, and adhere to the peace protocols established in October. U.S. representatives continue to liaise with officials in Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia in support of efforts to diffuse the conflict.

As discussions unfold, fresh allegations have surfaced. Cambodia’s defense ministry accused Thai fighter jets of bombing its Banteay Meanchey province, characterizing the act as aggressive and perilous for civilians. Conversely, Thailand dismissed these claims, accusing Cambodia of shelling civilian areas in Sa Kaeo province, asserting that Thai forces acted in self-defense.

Despite ongoing mistrust, the renewed discussions provide a glimmer of hope for diminishing violence. A successful ceasefire would enable displaced families to return home and start the journey of rebuilding their lives. For now, residents near the border remain vigilant, hoping that continued dialogue will usher in peace amidst persistent suffering.
