In a swift response to recent allegations, Thailand’s Social Security Office (SSO) has initiated an investigation into claims that HIV-positive patients under its insurance are receiving incomplete shipments of essential antiretroviral drugs at various hospitals, prompting them to return multiple times for their medicine.
The situation escalated when an insured patient took to social media, revealing the struggles of obtaining complete medication from a private hospital, which in turn sparked widespread concern about the reliability of treatment services.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploytalay Laksmisangchan reassured the public that the SSO has begun examining the issue thoroughly. Initial reviews suggest no widespread shortage of HIV medications exists at a national level and that sufficient supply is present in healthcare facilities.
The investigation highlights that the challenges may stem from specific hospitals' dispensing protocols instead of an actual drug shortage. Most social security-associated healthcare centers are reportedly continuing to provide uninterrupted access to HIV medications for their patients.
The SSO reiterated the importance of ensuring that all patients have steady access to their treatments. Those who face issues acquiring their HIV medications can reach out to the Medical Service System Division's Pharmacy Section at 02-9562500 for assistance in coordinating access.
The Thai government has reaffirmed its dedication to addressing HIV/AIDS and ensuring equitable healthcare access. Authorities have emphasized there is no discrimination against those living with HIV and are active in raising awareness and fostering social inclusion.
Additionally, government officials highlighted the benefits of Thailand’s National Health Security Fund, known as the “30-Baht Healthcare Scheme,” designed to offer healthcare coverage and treatment for individuals living with HIV and AIDS, assuring consistent access to vital medical services nationwide.
Experts underscore the importance of reliable access to antiretroviral therapy for maintaining health, minimizing transmission risks, and bolstering national efforts in controlling HIV infection rates. This investigation aims to identify any gaps in service delivery and guarantee that all patients receive seamless treatment moving forward.
