Thailand Releases Cambodian Soldiers Amid Ceasefire Renewal

Thailand Releases Cambodian Soldiers Amid Ceasefire Renewal

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

In a significant move toward mending relations, Thailand has released 18 Cambodian soldiers as part of a newly brokered ceasefire, officials announced on Wednesday. This decision aims to alleviate heightened tensions following several weeks of violent confrontations along the border.

The recent ceasefire was agreed upon over the weekend, ceasing hostilities at noon Saturday (0500 GMT). The fighting had persisted for approximately 20 days, resulting in at least 101 fatalities and displacing over half a million civilians. The conflict saw aerial operations, rocket fire, and artillery exchanges.

According to Cambodian Defence Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata, the handover took place at a border checkpoint at 10 a.m. (0300 GMT) on Wednesday, following 155 days of detention in Thailand. Battambang province's governor, Sok Lou, praised the returned soldiers as “heroic.”

Thailand's Foreign Ministry emphasized that the detained soldiers were treated “in accordance with international humanitarian law and principles” during their imprisonment.

The border dispute escalated earlier this month after a prior ceasefire negotiated by U.S. President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim collapsed. Under the terms of the new agreement, Thailand committed to releasing the soldiers if the ceasefire lasted for at least 72 hours. The handover was postponed by a day due to accusations from Thailand claiming Cambodia violated the ceasefire—claims that Cambodia has denied.

Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which facilitated the transfer, remarked, “Today’s release and repatriation of prisoners of war allow families to reunite and signify an important step in actualizing the commitments detailed in the Joint Statement.”

The return of these soldiers marks a constructive step towards stabilizing Thailand-Cambodia relations. Both nations are optimistic that the ceasefire will be sustained, thereby preventing further casualties and civilian displacement.

While challenges remain, this incident illustrates that diplomatic discussions, supported by international entities like the ICRC, can foster conflict reduction and herald a semblance of peace across a historically troubled border.
