In response to the baht reaching its strongest value against the U.S. dollar in over four years, Thailand’s finance ministry is looking into updated regulations regarding online gold trading. Officials note that surging trading volumes are contributing to this rapid currency appreciation, which does not fully align with the nation's economic fundamentals.
Lavaron Sangsnit, a senior official within the finance ministry, has indicated that the Revenue Department will explore the possibility of implementing a specific business tax affecting online gold trading activities. Additionally, there are discussions surrounding potential limits on trading volumes to safeguard against excessive market sway.
Central Bank Governor Vitai Ratanakorn pointed out that the significant trading volumes in gold have been the main driver behind the baht's gains. He mentioned that the central bank plans to regulate online gold transactions and impose upper limits on trading for key market players to control the rapid appreciation of the currency.
Measures have already been initiated to contain the ascendant baht, including enhanced monitoring of foreign exchange transactions associated with gold trading. Commercial banks have also been directed to keep a close watch on foreign currency inflows, all aimed at stabilizing the baht while mitigating further financial market distortions.
Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas has emphasized that the robust baht is negatively impacting Thailand’s economy, as a fast-rising currency increases export costs for foreign buyers and can dampen tourism interest and overall economic growth.
By regulating online gold trading and scrutinizing major transactions, Thailand aims to stabilize the baht and ensure that it accurately represents the nation’s economic conditions. Officials have underlined that these steps are designed to protect the economy while maintaining financial stability, without hampering normal market operations.
This situation highlights the impact of digital platforms and speculative trading on national currencies. Thailand is responding proactively to manage this evolving scenario and prevent enduring economic discrepancies.
