The Kiswa, the black cloth that covers the Holy Kaaba in Mecca, is decorated with Thuluth Jali Murakkab Arabic calligraphy, which features Quranic verses. This calligraphy is admired for its beauty and is often used for important and ceremonial purposes. The script is carefully designed to fit a lot of words in a limited space while maintaining its elegance, making the Kiswa look even more majestic and fitting for such a sacred place.
The Kiswa is changed annually in a unique ceremony. This year, 154 Saudi Arabian skilled labourers spent 11 months building the new Kiswa at the King Abdulaziz Complex. To guarantee that everything was completed with the utmost care and quality, the procedure adhered to tight guidelines.
The new Islamic year began with a ceremony to replace the Kiswa at dawn, which was aired live for the Muslim world to watch.
