BMW Recalls Cars Globally Over Fire Risk

BMW Recalls Cars Globally Over Fire Risk

Post by : Bianca Haleem

German carmaker BMW has announced a global recall of hundreds of thousands of vehicles due to a potential fire risk linked to engine starters. A company spokesperson confirmed the recall and said it affects a “mid-six-figure number” of vehicles worldwide.

According to BMW, 16 different models may be impacted. These vehicles were equipped with engine starters produced between July 2020 and July 2022. The issue is related to excessive wear in the electromagnet inside the starter over time.

What Is the Problem?

BMW said that after receiving customer complaints and inspecting affected vehicles, it found that the engine starter in some cars could become defective. The company also stated that a short circuit in the electromagnet cannot be ruled out.

If a short circuit happens, it may cause local overheating of the starter. In the worst-case scenario, this overheating could lead to a vehicle fire while driving.

Safety Advisory for Owners

BMW has advised customers not to leave their vehicles unattended with the engine running, especially after using remote engine start. The company said it will contact affected vehicle owners directly and replace the potentially faulty starters free of cost.

Financial Impact on BMW

The company spokesperson said the latest recall is not expected to have any significant impact on BMW’s earnings.

Earlier in 2024, BMW had to lower its financial outlook after recalling around 1.5 million vehicles due to faulty brake components supplied by Continental, which cost the company hundreds of millions of euros.

Official Statement

BMW confirmed that preventive action is being taken to ensure customer safety. Owners of affected vehicles will receive official communication regarding the replacement process.
