During his State visit to Singapore on May 30, Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam met with Singapore Parliament Speaker Seah Kian Peng, reinforcing the robust bilateral relations and identifying new prospects for collaboration between the two nations.
Speaker Seah Kian Peng warmly welcomed President To Lam, his wife, and the senior Vietnamese delegation. He acknowledged Vietnam’s growing influence in both regional and global contexts, extending his congratulations on To Lam’s re-election as General Secretary and his recent election as President. The Speaker highlighted To Lam’s keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, praising it as a portrayal of mutual regional ambitions and strategic alignments.
The two leaders acknowledged the significant strides made since the elevation of their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2025. They observed that collaboration has rapidly evolved across various spheres including politics, economy, technology, and people-to-people exchanges, reflecting the deep trust established between Vietnam and Singapore.
President To Lam noted the continued strength of political trust while trade, investment, and connectivity are on an upward trajectory. He pointed out the 23 Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIP) as a notable success in bilateral economic collaboration, serving as a model for regional development partnerships.
The two sides explored partnerships in emergent sectors poised to shape future economies, identifying digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, clean energy, carbon credit trading, innovation, financial hubs, and supply chain resilience as priority areas. Both leaders recognized these sectors as pivotal in bolstering economic competitiveness and fostering regional stability.
President To Lam acknowledged the crucial role of both countries' legislative bodies in facilitating the execution of bilateral agreements and fostering a supportive legal framework for collaboration. He advocated for increased exchanges among parliamentarians, including young lawmakers and women representatives, to enhance mutual understanding and share governance insights.
The meeting concluded with a mutual pledge to bolster parliamentary collaboration and advance ASEAN’s future. Speaker Seah Kian Peng expressed optimism that Vietnam would actively support Singapore’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027, as both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing a united and resilient Southeast Asian community.
