Mike Trout Testifies on Tyler Skaggs' Tragic Death

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Baseball legend Mike Trout took the stand on Tuesday in the wrongful death trial linked to his former teammate Tyler Skaggs. The Los Angeles Angels are facing a lawsuit, with Skaggs' family seeking $118 million in damages. Skaggs, who played as a pitcher, tragically passed away in 2019 due to an overdose during a team event in Texas. His untimely death sent shockwaves through the baseball community, leading the court to examine potential negligence by the franchise.

Trout became visibly emotional while recounting his friendship with Skaggs. Their bond began in 2010 when they both played for the Angels’ minor league team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Describing Skaggs as “funny, outgoing, and an overall joy to be around,” Trout noted that they often shared dinners, watched football games, and even played basketball together. Upon learning of Skaggs’ passing, he expressed profound grief, stating it was among the most challenging moments he faced in life.

The Skaggs family's lawsuit alleges that the Los Angeles Angels neglected to act against team employee Eric Kay, known to struggle with substance abuse. Kay, who served as the team's communications director, was later convicted for supplying Skaggs with counterfeit oxycodone laced with fentanyl. The family argues the team should have recognized Kay’s drug-related issues and intervened to protect the players.

Central to this investigation is Eric Kay’s role. Prosecutors assert that he provided opioids to Skaggs and other players. Kay received a 22-year federal prison sentence in 2022 for distributing drugs that contributed to Skaggs’ death. During Trout’s testimony, he admitted to noticing signs of Kay's drug issues prior to the tragic event.

Trout learned about Kay's concerning behavior from a clubhouse attendant, who suggested players should stop financially enabling Kay's reckless antics, such as eyebrow shaving for money. Trout immediately suspected drugs were involved, saying, “The first thing that came to my mind was drugs.”

Trout described Kay’s erratic behavior, mentioning he often appeared excessively energetic or was sweating heavily. Though uncertain about what substances Kay was using, Trout expressed concern and even offered to assist Kay at one point, recalling, “I said if you need anything, let me know.”

Realizing the possible extent of Kay's problems, Trout became more guarded about signing autographs for him, wanting to ensure the memorabilia wasn't sold to fund drug use. This demonstrated Trout’s commitment to preventing further harm.

The Angels have denied any liability in this case, claiming ignorance regarding Skaggs' substance abuse and Kay’s drug distribution. However, attorneys representing the plaintiffs contend that team officials overlooked clear warning signs and failed to uphold their own standards.

According to the official coroner's report, Skaggs died from asphyxiation due to vomiting after consuming a perilous combination of alcohol, fentanyl, and oxycodone. The report affirmed the presence of opioids linked back to the counterfeit pills given by Kay. Skaggs was discovered deceased in his hotel room on July 1, 2019.

Prior to Trout's testimony, other prominent witnesses, including Angels executives Tim Mead and Tom Taylor, took the stand to address the team's knowledge of Kay's drug issues and the measures, or lack thereof, taken in response. These testimonies are essential in determining the team's legal accountability for the death of this player.

This case has profoundly impacted Major League Baseball, igniting discussions around drug awareness, responsibility, and player safety. For Trout, this tragedy strikes a personal chord. His courtroom statements not only expressed sorrow for a lost friend but also frustration regarding a situation that could have perhaps been averted.

The trial continues in Orange County Superior Court, with the Skaggs family seeking justice and accountability. Their lawsuit aims to underscore the crucial need for teams to safeguard players against the risks associated with drug usage. Trout’s emotional testimony has played a pivotal role in this case, providing a heartfelt insight into the devastating effects of this tragedy on those close to Tyler Skaggs.
