South Africa’s lower order showcased resilience against Pakistan, with spinners Senuran Muthusamy and Keshav Maharaj forming a crucial fifty-run partnership. Resuming play at 235 for 8, South Africa was 98 runs behind but aggressively targeted Pakistan’s bowlers, maintaining tension in the match.
In the opening session, Pakistan was dominant, taking four wickets for only 50 runs. Debutant Asif Afridi made a mark with a remarkable five-wicket haul, applying pressure to the South African batsmen as he bowled effectively on a wearing pitch. Despite their strong showing, Pakistan squandered opportunities, including three dropped catches and a missed stumping.
South Africa lost their key batsmen quickly, with Tristan Stubbs and Kyle Verreynne falling early. Verreynne edged Asif’s delivery to the wicketkeeper, whilst Stubbs, who had a total of 68, managed just eight more runs before falling victim to Asif. Simon Harmer was dismissed soon after, making Afridi the oldest debutant at 38 years and 299 days to take a five-for in Tests.
Senuran Muthusamy, who resumed from the morning session, demonstrated poise and determination. He adopted an aggressive approach after the top order’s dismissal, executing sweeps and attacking shots with confidence. Despite being given out lbw to Sajid Khan, a successful review confirmed an inside edge, allowing him to continue batting for South Africa.
When Pakistan opted for the second new ball, they hoped for swing from Shaheen Shah Afridi; however, Marco Jansen seized the opportunity to drive impressively through mid-off. Afridi’s impressive 19-over spell was eventually complemented by Noman Ali, who claimed his maiden wicket by trapping Jansen lbw after a review. Muthusamy and Maharaj persisted, opting for calculated risks that added vital runs.
The pair of Muthusamy and Maharaj capitalized on Pakistan’s missed chances, with Maharaj particularly challenging Noman Ali while Muthusamy attacked Sajid Khan. Their fearless batting kept South Africa competitive and thwarted Pakistan’s efforts to widen their lead.
This determined lower-order partnership has shifted some momentum in favor of South Africa, reducing Pakistan’s first-innings lead while displaying aggressive yet calculated play, ensuring the Test match remains intensely competitive.
