Ricky Ponting, the former captain of Australia, has urged both fans and critics to maintain their faith in India’s veterans, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, following a seven-wicket loss to Australia in the first ODI held in Perth. Ponting remains optimistic, asserting that both players possess the necessary skills and experience to make a significant impact on India’s 50-over team as they gear up for the 2027 World Cup.
The three-match series proceeds to Adelaide on Thursday, culminating in Sydney on Saturday. Ponting pointed out that the batting conditions in Adelaide are favorable, although Kohli and Rohit will be up against some of the finest white-ball bowlers, posing a considerable challenge ahead.
Having only recently returned from winning the Champions Trophy earlier this year, both players faced difficulties against Australia. Rohit was sent back by Josh Hazlewood early, while Kohli was dismissed without scoring by Mitchell Starc. Nevertheless, Ponting reiterated that their abilities and reputations should not be overlooked.
Expressing his belief in their swift recovery, Ponting remarked, “You never discount champion players.” He praised Kohli, calling him one of the greatest 50-over cricketers he has ever observed and affirmed that the duo will find ways to contribute to India’s success, likely securing their spots for the upcoming World Cup.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri echoed Ponting's sentiments, commending both players for their significant impact on Indian cricket over the years. Shastri emphasized that their legacy is firmly established and expressed confidence in their continued value to the squad.
The impending match in Adelaide will challenge the duo's adaptability. Ponting anticipates that the demanding Australian bowling lineup will serve as an excellent opportunity for Kohli and Rohit to showcase their resilience and leadership during the match.
Despite the recent defeat, both Ponting and Shastri agree that Kohli and Rohit play pivotal roles in India’s ODI squad. Their experience, talent, and leadership are vital for steering the team toward success in the ongoing series and beyond, affirming that even following a poor outing, champions have the capability to bounce back.
