In a significant achievement, Zimbabwe triumphed over Afghanistan to claim their first home Test victory since 2013. The match ended with Zimbabwe winning by an innings and 73 runs, marking their largest Test win and their first innings victory since 2001. Richard Ngarava excelled on the field, earning his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket and effectively dismantling the Afghan batting order.
The Zimbabwean bowlers highlighted their dominance throughout the match, with Ngarava’s skillful deliveries wreaking havoc. Tanaka Chivanga’s early wickets helped to destabilize Afghanistan's innings, while Blessing Muzarabani's targeted closing spells sealed the game in under three hours on the third day. Significant contributions from Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza earlier on set the stage for Zimbabwe's commanding performance.
Afghanistan struggled to gain any footing in the match. Key players, including Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, fell early, failing to form the necessary partnerships. Although Bahir Shah attempted to resist, Zimbabwe’s bowlers swiftly extinguished any hopes of a comeback. The Afghan side's lack of experience in Test matches played a crucial role in their downfall, allowing Zimbabwe to assert their dominance with ease.
Ngarava's five-wicket haul, along with Chivanga’s speed and Muzarabani’s finishing touches, underscored Zimbabwe’s bowling prowess. Ben Curran's stellar 121-run innings earned him Player of the Match honors, with Raza contributing a solid 65 to the batting lineup. These performances emphasized the team's capacity to take advantage of opportunities and maintain command throughout the match.
Following the match, Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine expressed pride in the team’s performance. He commended the players’ resilience, especially after a slow start, and noted their ability to adapt and execute effectively in a challenging environment. Ervine considered the win a fitting end to a demanding year in Test cricket.
On the other hand, Afghan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi pointed to the early collapse as a pivotal moment in the game. He acknowledged that the lost momentum on day one significantly affected their prospects and stressed the necessity of gaining more Test experience. The team is determined to enhance their batting skills and learn valuable lessons from this defeat as they prepare for upcoming challenges.
Looking ahead, both teams will face off in a three-match T20I series beginning October 29. Zimbabwe seeks to harness the confidence gained from this historic Test victory, while Afghanistan aims to regroup and rectify their batting shortcomings.
This victory not only strengthens Zimbabwe’s standing in home Test cricket but also highlights the potential of their bowling attack, promising an optimistic future for the team in the international arena.
