A UAE delegation from the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, led by Al Reem Abdullah Al Falasi, participated in the Global Zero Waste Forum 2025 in Istanbul. The forum was held under the patronage of Emine Erdoğan, highlighting international efforts for sustainability and environmental protection.
Al Falasi stressed that the UAE’s environmental vision builds on the guidance of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His pioneering initiatives in irrigation and afforestation transformed deserts into green landscapes, reflecting the importance of progress in harmony with nature.
Al Falasi highlighted that President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan continues this vision, emphasizing that protecting the environment is both a national duty and a humanitarian responsibility. Sustainability is now a central pillar in UAE policies, aiming for climate neutrality by 2050.
The UAE actively engages children and youth in environmental protection. Al Falasi noted initiatives such as the Emirati Children's Parliament and COP28 UAE Youth Climate Champion programme, encouraging young people to lead campaigns and contribute to sustainability policies internationally.
Several programmes teach practical sustainability skills. The Junior Masterclass educates children on recycling and environmental protection, while the Little Volunteer initiative introduces young participants to community service, fostering empathy and responsibility from an early age.
The Children Environment Award, launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, honours young innovators proposing solutions in renewable energy, marine conservation, and waste reduction, linking children’s wellbeing to the planet’s health.
Al Falasi emphasised that the UAE’s environmental leadership has grown from national commitment to a global model. Initiatives like COP27, COP28, and the UAE-German Children’s Dialogue on Climate Change reflect the country’s dedication to fostering international collaboration on climate action.
Sustainability values in the UAE are passed down through generations. Al Falasi noted that awareness, education, and example ensure that every child today is prepared to protect the environment for a cleaner and safer future.
Concluding her remarks, Al Falasi reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to giving children and youth a voice in international forums. She encouraged all participating organisations to adopt inclusive strategies that empower young people to contribute to shaping a sustainable future.
