Donald Trump has officially endorsed Steve Hilton, a former UK political adviser, in his bid for the California governorship. This endorsement adds significant momentum to Hilton's campaign as the June primary approaches, drawing considerable attention to this highly competitive election in a traditionally Democratic stronghold.
On his social media platform, Trump lauded Hilton’s potential to be “a great governor” and took aim at the current Democratic administration in California, suggesting that existing policies have driven residents away. His backing is anticipated to sway Republican voters and possibly alter the competitive landscape of the race.
Hilton, who was a senior adviser to former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, has dove into the California political scene after transitioning from media roles, including a stint hosting a show on Fox News. He is also engaged in academia as a visiting scholar at Stanford University, contributing to discussions around public policy.
His campaign prioritizes critical matters such as tax reduction, cutting down government expenditure, and tackling the soaring cost of living in California. Hilton is also emphasizing initiatives to enhance housing affordability and improve economic conditions for families throughout the state.
The California primary is set for June 2, operating under a “top-two” electoral format. This means the two candidates who earn the most votes will progress to the general election, irrespective of their party affiliation. This could lead to unexpected outcomes, particularly in races where numerous candidates from a single party vie for votes.
Despite the Republican Party’s recent difficulties in securing statewide victories in California, many within the party view this campaign as a renewed opportunity, especially given the fragmented Democratic field. Political experts caution, however, that Trump's endorsement may have a dual impact; while it may enhance support for Hilton among Republicans, it might complicate his appeal to a broader audience, including moderate and independent voters in a predominantly liberal environment.
Current polling suggests a fierce contest, with support ebbing and flowing among both Republican and Democratic hopefuls. Trump's endorsement may also influence other contenders, such as Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, as conservative votes might consolidate around Hilton.
With the race continuing to unfold, candidates are expected to remain agile, honing in on the primary concerns of voters as they seek to secure their places for the upcoming general election.
