Qatar, Egypt, Turkey Urge Hamas to Accept US Proposal

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey have urged Hamas to respond positively to US President Donald Trump’s proposed Gaza ceasefire-hostage deal. The proposal aims to end ongoing hostilities, secure the release of hostages, and establish conditions for peace in Gaza. Despite mediator pressure, Hamas has raised concerns over perceived imbalances favoring Israel.

Mediators Meet Hamas Leaders

Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani and Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad met with Hamas leaders in Doha, with Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin attending. Discussions focused on convincing Hamas to accept the terms as part of the US-led initiative to end the war swiftly and protect civilians.

Hamas Response

Hamas indicated it would examine the proposal in good faith. The terror group emphasized the need for careful consideration of terms, particularly regarding the release of hostages and disarmament conditions. Qatar also confirmed that Hamas committed to reviewing the deal responsibly.

International Support

The proposal has received backing from Western nations, the Palestinian Authority, Russia, and the Vatican. Russian officials expressed hope the plan would help bring peace, while Pope Leo XIV praised the initiative and urged Hamas to respond within the given timeframe.

Hostage and Prisoner Exchange

The plan outlines a three-day release of 48 hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences, 1,700 detained Gazans including women and children, and the return of 15 deceased Gazan bodies for each Israeli hostage. These measures are aimed at restoring humanitarian stability.

Israeli Withdrawal and Demilitarization

The deal also includes phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, disarmament of Hamas, and the establishment of an international transitional government without Hamas or the Palestinian Authority. Hamas has raised objections, particularly about giving up hostages in the first 72 hours, which it views as a critical bargaining tool.

Conflicting Internal Reports

Reports differ regarding Hamas’ internal stance. BBC sources suggest the military leadership in Gaza opposes the plan, while sources cited by Asharq Al-Awsat indicate a willingness to respond positively to end the war. Disagreements exist between Gaza-based leaders and those operating abroad regarding the timing and acceptance of the proposal.

Activist Opposition

US anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups, including Code Pink, National Students for Justice in Palestine, and the Palestinian Community Network, criticized the plan. They claim it undermines Palestinian autonomy, ends Hamas’ political control, and favors Israel’s interests.

Israel’s Position

Israel rejects allegations of genocide in Gaza, emphasizing efforts to minimize civilian casualties while targeting Hamas militants who operate from within civilian areas. Israeli leadership stresses that Hamas uses the local population as human shields, complicating military operations.

Urgency for Response

Mediators have requested Hamas to act quickly, ideally providing a response within two to four days. Global attention remains focused on whether Hamas will accept the US plan, which has been framed as a rare opportunity for a ceasefire and resolution of hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The proposal remains under intense scrutiny, with the international community urging both sides to reach a sustainable ceasefire. Hamas’ eventual decision will significantly affect regional stability, humanitarian conditions, and ongoing diplomatic efforts led by the United States and its partners.
