Turkey Battles 761 Fires in 10 Days, Homes Damaged

Over the past 10 days, Türkiye has been facing a major environmental disaster. The country has reported a total of 761 forest fires in this short period. This number is extremely alarming because it accounts for about 25% (a quarter) of all the fires that have happened in Türkiye so far this year. These figures were shared by the government on Sunday.

Thankfully, according to the Türkiye Communications Directorate (a government department responsible for public information), all 761 fires have now either been completely put out or are under control. This is a big relief for the people living in affected areas, but the impact of these fires has been severe.

Fires Hit Hard in İzmir – Hundreds of Homes Damaged

One of the most affected areas has been the city of İzmir, located in western Türkiye. This city is known for its beautiful natural surroundings and coastal scenery, but it has suffered a major blow due to the fires.

Türkiye's Interior Minister, Mr. Ali Yerlikaya, shared a very concerning update. He said that at least 228 homes have been seriously damaged in İzmir alone. Some houses have been completely destroyed, while others are no longer safe to live in.

Right now, teams are still trying to find out how much total damage has been done in İzmir and other areas. Firefighters, government officials, and emergency responders are working together to assess the situation and help the people who have lost their homes and belongings.

Temporary Shelter for People Who Lost Their Homes

To support those who have been affected, the Turkish government is taking immediate action. People who have lost their homes will not be left without shelter. The government has announced that they will be given temporary housing in containers.

These containers are similar to portable rooms or mobile homes. They are often used during emergencies to provide shelter. While they may not be as comfortable as regular homes, they offer a safe place to stay until people can return to normal life or have their homes rebuilt.

The minister assured that no one will be left behind and that the government is doing everything it can to help families affected by this tragedy.

Mass Evacuations Across the Country

It’s not just İzmir that has suffered. Fires have also been spreading to many other regions of Türkiye. As a result, tens of thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their homes. These evacuations are happening so that people can be moved out of danger quickly.

In some areas, residents had to leave in the middle of the night with only a few belongings. In other places, villages and small towns were cleared completely to make sure no one was harmed by the fast-moving flames.

People have been moved to safer places like community halls, schools, and temporary shelters. Many volunteers and aid organizations are also stepping in to provide food, water, and basic necessities.

Fighting the Fires: Türkiye’s Resources and Efforts

Fighting this huge number of fires is not easy. It requires both manpower and equipment. According to government reports, Türkiye currently has:

  • 27 firefighting planes
  • 105 firefighting helicopters

These planes and helicopters are playing a huge role in controlling the fires. They fly over burning areas and drop large amounts of water to stop the flames from spreading.

In addition to these aerial efforts, thousands of firefighters and volunteers are working on the ground. They are using water hoses, shovels, and other tools to create firebreaks and keep the fires from reaching homes and forests.

There are also emergency response teams, medical staff, and police helping with evacuations, first aid, and crowd management.

Why Are So Many Fires Happening?

Although the government didn’t explain the exact causes of these 761 fires, it is widely known that forest fires often happen during very hot, dry weather. Türkiye, like many other countries, has been experiencing extremely high summer temperatures, strong winds, and very low humidity.

These conditions make forests and grassy areas highly flammable, which means even a small spark can lead to a large fire. In some cases, forest fires are also started by human carelessness, such as throwing cigarette butts, lighting barbecues in unsafe areas, or not properly extinguishing campfires.

There have also been concerns about climate change, which experts say is making heatwaves and dry weather more common and more intense.

Emotional and Environmental Impact

The fires have not only destroyed homes and displaced people, but they have also damaged thousands of acres of beautiful forests. These green areas are home to many animals and birds. The loss of trees, plants, and wildlife is heartbreaking.

Many citizens have shared emotional messages on social media, showing their support for firefighters and expressing sadness over the damage to nature. Local people are also volunteering to help rebuild the affected areas and plant trees once the fires are over.

There is also growing public demand for stronger laws to prevent forest fires and punish those who cause them — whether intentionally or by accident.

Government Response and Next Steps

The Turkish government has promised to support the victims in every possible way. Apart from temporary housing, they are expected to offer:

  • Financial aid to people who lost homes or property
  • Help with rebuilding homes
  • Free medical care for anyone injured during the fires
  • Counseling and support for families and children affected by trauma

The Ministry of Forestry is also working on plans to replant forests and protect wildlife that survived the fires.

A National Call for Awareness

This recent wave of fires is a wake-up call for everyone. Officials and environmental experts are urging the public to be more careful when in nature. People are being asked not to throw trash, light open fires, or engage in risky behavior that could cause a fire.

The media is also running public awareness campaigns to help people understand the seriousness of forest fires and how to prevent them.

In just 10 days, Türkiye has faced one of its most challenging wildfire seasons. 761 fires have tested the country’s emergency systems and its people’s strength. While all the fires are now under control, the journey to recovery is just beginning.

With the help of firefighting teams, government support, and the resilience of local communities, Türkiye is working hard to rise from the ashes — one day at a time.
