Turkey Appeals for Dialogue with Syria's SDF Amid Rising Tensions

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Turkey has urged the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to engage in dialogue and negotiations to overcome their disputes, cautioning that the patience of regional stakeholders is dwindling. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan conveyed this message, asserting that Ankara prefers a peaceful resolution but cannot delay indefinitely.

In a recent interview, Fidan stated Turkey aims to avoid military confrontation with the SDF. Instead, he encouraged all parties to concentrate on diplomatic channels and peaceful resolutions. However, he warned that any further postponement of a vital agreement could escalate tensions dangerously.

Central to this situation is the integration deal signed on March 10, designed to integrate the SDF within a broader governance and security framework in Syria. Fidan emphasized that Turkey and other parties expect the SDF to adhere strictly to this agreement without any modifications or delays.

“Everyone is awaiting adherence to the agreement as it was ratified,” Fidan asserted, adding that any alterations or delays could have severe repercussions—which Turkey is keen to prevent.

Turkey historically regards the SDF with skepticism, citing close links to Kurdish militants posing a security threat. Previously, Turkey has executed military operations in northern Syria to confront these Kurdish-led factions near its borders.

Fidan's remarks imply that while Turkey wishes to avert further conflict, it is delivering a stern warning. He noted that the patience of all involved parties is “running out,” suggesting that diplomatic measures cannot persist devoid of tangible outcomes.

The foreign minister reiterated that Turkey prioritizes regional stability, asserting that dialogue and negotiation are paramount for achieving lasting peace, entering through arms is not an option. However, the responsibility now resides with the SDF to uphold its commitments.

With tensions elevated in northern Syria, Turkey's statements reveal the delicate interplay between diplomacy and potential conflict. The future of peaceful negotiations may hinge on the SDF's prompt and serious response to these demands.
