Turkey and Syria Build New Floating Bridge
Turkish and Syrian forces have completed a new floating bridge across the Euphrates River in eastern Syria, creating another important transport link for residents in Deir Ezzor province. The project is also being viewed as a visible example of growing military and institutional cooperation between Türkiye and Syria.
Bridge Replaces Flood-Damaged Crossing
The new floating bridge was completed on August 30, 2026, according to Türkiye's ambassador to Damascus, Nuh Yilmaz. The bridge was constructed to replace an earlier crossing that was destroyed by flooding. Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra said the new structure is intended to reduce transportation difficulties for people living in the Deir Ezzor area.
Second Joint Bridge Project
The project marks the second bridge built jointly by Turkish and Syrian military forces. Yilmaz described the project as a sign that cooperation between the two countries is expanding beyond political discussions and into practical infrastructure work. He said Turkish and Syrian armed forces were also building the future together in peacetime.
Important Transport Link for Deir Ezzor
The Euphrates divides communities and settlements in Deir Ezzor province, making river crossings important for everyday transportation. Syrian state media reported that the new floating bridge was installed near Al-Mayadeen, east of Deir Ezzor, with the goal of easing the transportation burden on local residents.
The project is particularly significant because the region has suffered extensive damage to transport infrastructure during years of conflict and flooding. The availability of another crossing can help improve movement between communities on opposite sides of the river, although official reports have not provided detailed information about the bridge's length, load capacity or exact civilian opening arrangements.

Turkey-Syria Cooperation Expands
The bridge comes amid a broader expansion of relations between Ankara and Damascus following the fall of Bashar Assad's government in late 2024. Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra thanked Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler for efforts to strengthen trust and cooperation between the two countries. The joint infrastructure project therefore carries significance beyond transportation, as it reflects the two governments' efforts to develop closer practical ties.
The floating bridge is important for both local transportation and wider Turkey-Syria relations. For residents of Deir Ezzor, it provides an additional route across the Euphrates after previous infrastructure was damaged. For Ankara and Damascus, it represents another example of military cooperation being used for practical infrastructure development.
The project also highlights the changing relationship between Türkiye and Syria.
