Dubai Enhances Storm Preparedness with New Infrastructure and Teams

Post by : Bianca Haleem

To tackle the recent erratic weather patterns impacting Dubai and the broader UAE, the Dubai Municipality has instituted extensive measures. The authority is diligently monitoring the situation with dedicated teams working continuously. These initiatives reflect their ongoing commitment to minimize the effects of heavy rainfall and maintain vital services.

The revised strategy aims to sustain infrastructure functionality under various weather conditions. Essential priorities include ensuring public safety, protecting properties, mitigating disturbances, and facilitating smooth traffic throughout the emirate.

Engineers have completed thorough inspections and maintenance of stormwater drainage systems as a part of proactive planning. This effort includes the installation of 60 kilometres of above-ground pumping lines that enhance water discharge in areas susceptible to flooding.

To boost storage capabilities, six temporary lakes have been constructed in critical regions, supplementing existing rainwater collection facilities that hold close to 600,000 cubic metres. These infrastructures alleviate pressure on main networks during heavy rains. Additionally, pumping lines are connected to significant outfalls, such as the Dubai Water Canal, Dubai Creek, coastal outlets, and a deep tunnel system for efficient water diversion.

Operational teams are ramping up cleaning and maintenance efforts, concentrating on rainwater drainage inlets, filters, and gradient lines. In collaboration with real estate developers and free zones, over 84,000 drainage inlets have been inspected to ensure optimal network performance during rainfall.

24/7 Emergency Response Activated

The Dubai Municipality has established a round-the-clock emergency response unit equipped with advanced tools and logistical support. These teams are responsible for removing standing water, addressing obstructions, and reacting swiftly to public reports. Additional help has been enlisted through pre-approved contracts with private firms for water pumping during peak times.

Eng. Adel Mohammed Al Marzouqi, head of the Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Team as well as CEO of the Waste and Sewerage Agency, stated that Dubai's strategy integrates engineering solutions, infrastructure enhancements, and comprehensive planning. He highlighted temporary lakes, network expansions, and various outfall connections as essential measures to effectively manage extreme weather while keeping daily routines uninterrupted.

He also stressed that collaboration with governmental partners, real estate developers, and strategic institutions enhances decision-making while expediting response efforts. Training programs and practical drills have been executed to ensure technical teams are ready for changing weather scenarios.

Public Cooperation Requested

In addition to upgrading infrastructure, the municipality has conducted simulation exercises to improve communication with call centers and streamline emergency notifications. Authorities are urging residents to adhere to safety protocols, limit travel during inclement weather, and report any water standing or urgent issues through the Dubai Municipality Contact Centre at 800900 or via WhatsApp.

Residents are also encouraged to stay informed by following official weather updates released by UAE authorities.
