UAE Supports Saudi Arabia's Initiative for Yemen's Security

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The United Arab Emirates has voiced its robust support for Saudi Arabia's initiative aimed at restoring security and stability in Yemen, where tensions are escalating in the southern regions. An official statement from the UAE's foreign ministry released on Friday underscored its commitment to endorsing initiatives that strengthen peace, development, and stability in Yemen.

This assertion coincides with a precarious moment as Yemen's key southern separatist faction, the Southern Transitional Council (STC), has expanded its influence in southern territories. Earlier this month, the STC forced the Saudi-backed, internationally recognized Yemeni government out of its base in the port city of Aden and subsequently claimed extensive control over southern regions, raising alarms about renewed conflict.

The STC, which is backed by the UAE, has consistently sought increased autonomy or even independence for southern Yemen. While it was initially part of the Saudi-led coalition opposing the Iran-aligned Houthi insurgency, the STC has shifted its stance against the central government and continues to advocate for self-governance in the south.

Saudi Arabia, leading the coalition backing Yemen's internationally recognized government, expressed hope on Thursday that the STC would refrain from further escalations. Riyadh has called on the group to withdraw its forces from the strategically crucial eastern provinces of Hadramout and Mahra, essential for Yemen's unity and stability.

In a bid to mitigate rising tensions, a combined Saudi-Emirati military delegation arrived in Aden on December 12. This team is collaborating with local stakeholders to reduce the likelihood of conflict and to seek a peaceful resolution. Saudi representatives mentioned that these teams are arranging for STC forces to revert to their previous positions outside the contended provinces, with negotiations still ongoing.

Yemen has endured a prolonged and devastating civil war since 2014, ignited when the Houthi movement seized the capital, Sanaa, compelling the Saudi-supported government to retreat south. The nation remains divided, with the Houthis asserting control over most of the north and the government along with its allies holding parts of the south.

The war has precipitated one of the world's gravest humanitarian crises, leaving millions suffering from food scarcity, displacement, and limited access to essential services. The mix of political fragmentation, foreign intervention, and incessant fighting has severely hindered progress toward securing lasting peace.

The geopolitical significance of Yemen is further amplified by its position between Saudi Arabia and a crucial shipping route in the Red Sea, making its stability vital for regional security and international trade. Historically, Yemen was split into separate northern and southern states until 1990, a context that continues to influence current political tensions.

By endorsing Saudi Arabia's endeavors, the UAE has reaffirmed its backing for coordinated regional efforts aimed at diffusing tensions. Both nations have articulated their goal of averting further violence, fostering dialogue among Yemeni factions, and steering the country toward enduring stability.

While challenges persist, the collaborative Saudi-Emirati approach underscores the necessity of cooperation in navigating Yemen's intricate conflict. The success of these initiatives largely relies on the willingness of all involved parties to de-escalate and strive for a political resolution that ushers peace for a war-weary population.
