UAE Advances Its Role in Antarctic Initiatives at ATCM48 in Japan

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Emirates Polar Program marked its second participation in the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM48) and the 28th session of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP28), hosted in Hiroshima, Japan, from May 11 to May 21, 2026. This event underscores the UAE's growing influence in both Antarctic governance and research endeavors.

As a non-consultative party, the UAE delegation engaged in plenary sessions, contributing insights at the Committee for Environmental Protection forum led by Chief Science Advisor Dr. Aisha Al Suwaidi. Their attendance reinforces the nation’s unwavering commitment to fostering international scientific discussions under the Antarctic Treaty.

During the proceedings, the UAE collaborated with Bulgaria to present a working paper focused on establishing a new sub-base unit. This venture, overseen by the National Center of Meteorology and under the auspices of the Emirates Polar Program, signifies a tangible cooperative effort in Antarctic scientific research and infrastructure development.

The Antarctic Treaty System is pivotal in promoting collaborative scientific peace and ecological protection in Antarctica. The UAE's participation illustrates its strong dedication to science diplomacy and environmental responsibility.

The Emirates Polar Program’s involvement in ATCM48 equips the UAE for enhanced participation in future meetings, such as ATCM49, thereby solidifying its enduring contributions to scientific and environmental efforts in the region.
