WHO Director Highlights UAE’s Strong and Modern Health System

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Hanan Balkhy, praised the UAE for building one of the most advanced health systems in the world. Speaking to WAM during Abu Dhabi Finance Week, she said the UAE has repeatedly shown that it can manage health challenges with speed, organisation, and strong planning. She explained that the country proved its strength during the COVID-19 pandemic when it demonstrated excellent epidemiological surveillance, fast decision-making, and smooth coordination between public and private healthcare providers. This cooperation helped avoid service gaps and kept the health system working without interruption.

Balkhy said the UAE’s ability to offer efficient and high-quality medical care makes it a model for other countries. She noted that the health sector’s strong infrastructure, modern technology, and skilled workforce reflect the country’s commitment to improving public health. According to her, the UAE has shown that when a health system is united and well-managed, it can respond to both emergencies and long-term health needs effectively.

She also highlighted the importance of attending Abu Dhabi Finance Week because it allows WHO to connect with donors, partners, and supporters working on global health issues. Balkhy stressed that collaboration is essential in solving major health challenges and ensuring sustainable health development.

She explained that donors come from many groups, including governments, private companies, and international organisations. Their support helps improve research, strengthen health systems, and create long-term solutions for communities. Balkhy added that working together allows all partners to handle public health concerns more effectively and build stronger systems for the future. She said the UAE’s experience shows how cooperation, innovation, and commitment can lead to a modern and resilient healthcare system.
