UAE Leader Expresses Solidarity with the Philippines Following Earthquake

Post by : Bianca Haleem

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. after a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 37 lives and leaving over 400 injured.

In his message to President Marcos, Sheikh Mohamed expressed his sympathy for the victims' families and offered support to the Philippine people as rescue and recovery efforts are underway in the affected areas.

Earlier, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated its solidarity with the Philippines, extending condolences to the affected families and wishing a swift recovery for the injured.

The earthquake, measured at 7.8 on the Richter scale, struck early Monday morning about 20 kilometers from the coast of Sarangani province in southern Philippines. The tremor triggered tsunami alerts in several nations and was felt widely across Mindanao and even reached Manado, a city on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, situated approximately 420 kilometers away.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing as emergency responders strive to locate survivors and assist affected communities.

General Santos City, with a population exceeding 700,000, reported significant damage and has been put under a state of calamity following the collapse of several buildings. Streets are littered with debris, and fallen power lines have led to widespread disruptions.

Authorities are actively evaluating the full extent of the destruction as relief initiatives persist following one of the most severe earthquakes to impact the area in recent times.
