The United Arab Emirates took part in the 11th Annual Meeting of the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group, conducted in New Delhi, India, on May 21 and 22. This event celebrated the 10th year of the BRICS counter-terrorism initiative.
Leading the UAE delegation, His Excellency Maqsood Kruse, Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Countering Violent Extremism and Terrorism, expressed the country's strong resolve in fostering international collaboration against terrorism and violent extremism.
During the discussions, Kruse recognized the evolving challenges from terrorist organizations and extremist factions, noting the urgency in strengthening partnerships to counter these threats.
He appreciated India's role as the host and congratulated the nation on taking the BRICS chairmanship for 2026, underscoring the significance of global dialogue in tackling security issues.
Highlighting the modern tactics employed by terrorist groups, Kruse pointed out their increasing utilization of digital platforms, artificial intelligence, and advanced technologies for recruitment and financing. He advocated for robust international collaboration to effectively combat these emerging threats.
According to Kruse, the UAE adopts a comprehensive strategy focusing on preventive measures and practical initiatives that target the root causes of extremism, hatred, and terrorism. He mentioned the UAE's role in hosting several esteemed institutions dedicated to prevention and global cooperation.
As part of its co-chairmanship alongside China of the BRICS Sub-Working Group on Preventing the Misuse of the Internet for Terrorist Purposes, the UAE presented a concept paper aimed at enhancing global cooperation against the exploitation of digital platforms by terrorists.
In addition, the delegation showcased a case study illustrating the UAE's proactive measures against terror financing, aligning strong legislative frameworks with international standards. The UAE firmly denounced all forms of terrorism and extremism.
Kruse urged a balanced international response combining security measures with development and human rights considerations. He called for improved intelligence sharing, strengthened cybersecurity cooperation, and better coordination on financial systems to prevent misuse by terrorist networks.
On the sidelines, the UAE delegation engaged in bilateral talks with counterparts from India, Russia, and China to discuss enhanced cooperation and expertise exchange in terrorism prevention.
The UAE concluded the meeting by reaffirming its commitment to collaborating with BRICS member countries and partners to bolster global initiatives aimed at eradicating international terrorism while fostering peace, stability, and security across the globe.
