UAE Donates $15 Million to Support Sudanese Refugees Amid Crisis

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Demonstrating a robust humanitarian resolve, the United Arab Emirates has pledged $15 million to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to aid refugees and displaced individuals in Sudan and neighboring regions. This commitment was revealed during the UNHCR Pledging Conference in Geneva for the 2026 Global Appeal.

This action highlights the UAE’s prominent role as a significant donor in global humanitarian challenges. Jamal Al Musharakh, the UAE Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, stressed the urgent need for coordinated assistance amid the escalating global displacement crisis fueled by conflicts, persecution, and climate changes.

Since the onset of conflict in Sudan in 2023, the UAE has taken the lead in aid initiatives, contributing nearly $784 million in relief efforts. This places the UAE as the second-largest donor to Sudan, after the United States, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). In total, UAE aid to Sudan has exceeded $4.24 billion over the past decade, from 2015 to 2025.

The annual UNHCR Pledging Conference at Geneva’s Palais des Nations serves as a platform for member states to declare voluntary contributions for the upcoming year. These funds are crucial for maintaining emergency responses, especially for at-risk populations like women and children who suffer immensely during displacement crises.

Through its timely and predictable humanitarian funding, the UAE’s pledge is anticipated to bolster essential services, including shelter, healthcare, and education, aiding in the stabilization of communities affected by ongoing conflict.
