The UAE observed World Tsunami Awareness Day, stressing the need for public preparedness against one of nature’s most destructive hazards. This year’s theme, “Be Tsunami Ready – Invest in Tsunami Preparedness,” underlined the value of timely warnings and coordinated local action.
Tsunamis can inflict wide-ranging damage, loss of life and lasting environmental and social consequences, with coastal populations most at risk. The United Nations uses the day to remind nations and communities about the importance of awareness, readiness and rapid response.
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) took an active role in the observance, advancing measures to lower risk and build resilience. Key activities include upgrading the Tsunami Early Warning System for North-West Indian Ocean countries, running regional workshops to harmonize evacuation procedures and leveraging media channels to spread alerts effectively.
NCM also delivers nationwide outreach, provides hands-on training and joins large-scale tsunami drills such as IOWave25. These exercises evaluate community response, refine evacuation strategies and reinforce a preventative mindset.
Through these programmes, the UAE is reinforcing its proactive approach to safeguarding residents while strengthening regional and international cooperation on disaster risk management.
