Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, said that the opening of the Zayed National Museum in December 2025 will be a historic moment as the UAE marks its 54th National Day. He explained that the museum will be the main landmark of the Saadiyat Cultural District and will serve as the home of the nation’s story. According to him, the museum will present the UAE’s identity, history and future ambitions with honesty and vision, while honouring the enduring legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
Al Mubarak noted that Abu Dhabi’s cultural plans have always been based on two beliefs: that culture is a powerful bridge between societies and that a nation grows stronger when it protects its heritage while also embracing the future. He said the Zayed National Museum will reflect both of these principles. It will stand alongside other major institutions on Saadiyat Island, forming a group of cultural landmarks that highlight the UAE’s commitment to creativity and knowledge. Yet, he added, its identity will remain unique because it is deeply rooted in the story of the UAE and the values of its people.
Inside the museum, visitors will discover stories that are both personal and universal, starting from ancient history that dates back 300,000 years, all the way to the achievements of the modern UAE. Among the museum’s most important treasures are the Abu Dhabi Pearl, one of the oldest natural pearls ever found, and the Magan boat reconstruction, a symbol of ancient cultural exchange. These items will be shown alongside multimedia displays and rare archives that bring the UAE’s past to life for future generations.
Al Mubarak said the museum will highlight the life, beliefs and leadership values of Sheikh Zayed, including his love for nature, unity and education, as well as his openness to the world. He added that the museum is designed not just to preserve history but also to support learning, dialogue and global cooperation. It will host exhibitions that connect the UAE to the world, covering topics such as archaeology, sustainability and art through the lens of national heritage.
He also praised the museum’s architecture, designed by Foster + Partners, with five towers shaped like a falcon’s wings. The building uses sustainable cooling technologies that reflect traditional Emirati innovation, honouring Sheikh Zayed’s belief in protecting the environment.
