UK Prepares for Inquiry Results on Novichok Poisoning Linked to Dawn Sturgess

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The United Kingdom is gearing up for a significant revelation as an official inquiry is set to present its findings regarding the tragic death of Dawn Sturgess. She succumbed after inadvertently exposing herself to the lethal Novichok nerve agent back in 2018. This incident occurred just months following the attempted assassination of Sergei Skripal, a former double agent for Russia, and his daughter Yulia.

The poisoning incident took place in Salisbury, a typically quiet town in southern England. Sergei and Yulia Skripal were discovered unconscious on a bench, having been affected by a potent nerve agent applied to the door handle of Skripal’s residence. British authorities later implicated Russian military intelligence in the incident, which Russia has consistently denied.

Four months post-incident, the 44-year-old mother of three, Dawn Sturgess, fell victim as her partner unknowingly handled a fake perfume bottle believed to have been used by the assailants to transport the poison into the UK. After applying the perfume to her wrists, she became gravely ill, ultimately passing away shortly thereafter, while her partner experienced serious health complications but survived.

Three Russian individuals have been charged in absentia by British law enforcement, identified as officers from Russia's GRU intelligence agency. Two of them appeared on Russian television, claiming to have merely been tourists visiting Salisbury's renowned cathedral, while all three deny any wrongdoing.

No one has been formally charged in connection with Dawn Sturgess's death, leaving her family in a prolonged search for justice. The inquiry has scrutinized secretive evidence from British intelligence and assessed Skripal’s background as a former spy. Skripal, who now lives under security concerns, believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin sanctioned the attack.

This poisoning incident resulted in one of the most significant diplomatic crises between Russia and Western nations since the Cold War, leading to the expulsion of numerous Russian diplomats from Europe and the U.S. Relations have further deteriorated due to Russia's ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the UK's staunch support for Kyiv.

The anticipated report is expected to provide deeper insights into the orchestration of the attack, the methods by which the nerve agent infiltrated the nation, and potential failings that led to this tragedy haunting innocent individuals. The Skripals did not provide in-person testimony owing to safety concerns, with their current location remaining a mystery.
