Missiles and Drones Strike Ukraine Before Zelenskiy-Trump Discussions

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Ukraine endured a new round of missile and drone attacks from Russia this past Saturday, mere hours before President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was set to engage in pivotal discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, aimed at reaching a resolution to the protracted conflict. The assaults primarily targeted Kyiv and other regions, demanding that air defense forces remain active overnight while citizens sheltered from the chaos.

Residents of the Ukrainian capital reported loud explosions as air raid sirens blared throughout the area. Ukrainian officials confirmed that the strikes struck Kyiv as well as northeastern and southern areas of the nation. Firefighters hurried to address damage to residential buildings, and emergency teams were mobilized to control fires and assist the injured. Reports indicated at least eight individuals were wounded in Kyiv alone.

The repercussions of these strikes were felt beyond Ukrainian borders, with Poland temporarily shutting down two airports in its southeast after deploying fighter jets as a precautionary measure, underscoring the broader regional implications of the ongoing conflict. Russian authorities have not made any immediate comments regarding these attacks.

This wave of strikes coincided with a sensitive diplomatic juncture. President Zelenskiy has indicated that his forthcoming meeting with President Trump will focus on the contentious issue of territorial claims. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, land control has posed the most significant barrier to achieving peace. Zelenskiy maintains that Ukraine seeks to halt fighting along existing front lines, while Russia is pushing for additional territorial gains, notably in eastern Ukraine.

Zelenskiy reports that a U.S.-aided peace initiative containing 20 points is nearing completion, with around 90% of the draft finalized, and current discussions are centered on intricate details. Additionally, a security agreement between Ukraine and the U.S. is also close to being finalized, which Zelenskiy believes is essential for safeguarding against future assaults, especially given the ineffectiveness of past assurances.

President Trump stated that the U.S. is spearheading the peace efforts and that no agreements will advance without his endorsement. He expressed optimism about the outcomes of his meeting with Zelenskiy and is also expected to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon. In advance of their in-person dialogue, Trump and Zelenskiy are scheduled for a joint conference call with European leaders, including the head of the European Commission.

Yet, major challenges persist. The control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, poses a serious concern as it was captured by Russian forces early in the conflict and continues to be a significant safety hazard. Discussions about establishing a free economic zone in parts of eastern Ukraine are ongoing under a potential compromise, but specifics remain elusive.

Zelenskiy has indicated that if adequate international support on territorial issues cannot be secured, he might consider putting the peace plan up for a national referendum. However, he emphasized that this scenario would only occur if Russia agrees to a ceasefire lasting at least 60 days to facilitate the process safely.

As missile attacks endure and diplomatic negotiations surge, Ukraine stands at a critical crossroads. The impending discussions could potentially redefine the trajectory of the conflict, but for now, everyday citizens continue to endure the persistent threat and devastation of warfare.
