Gaza's Humanitarian Efforts Under Threat, UN Warns

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The United Nations, alongside a multitude of humanitarian organizations, has issued a critical warning about the potential cessation of essential aid operations in Gaza. They indicate that recent Israeli restrictions could lead to many international humanitarian entities ceasing their work, potentially leaving millions of Palestinians without fundamental assistance.

In a collective statement released this week, the UN and over 200 aid agencies, both local and global, highlighted the increasingly perilous situation. They have characterized Israel's aid registration process as vague, unpredictable, and significantly swayed by political factors. This dynamic casts doubt on the ability of aid organizations to maintain their presence in Gaza and surrounding areas.

Many international aid groups face possible de-registration by the deadline of December 31. Should this occur, they would be compelled to terminate their operations within 60 days. The implications of such a move would be catastrophic, as these organizations are integral to the functioning of Gaza’s field hospitals, health clinics, emergency shelters, clean water systems, and nutritional programs for children.

The statement cautioned that the absence of these humanitarian efforts would result in a marked decline in access to essential services such as healthcare, clean water, sanitation, and emergency shelters. Vulnerable children suffering from acute malnutrition and families displaced by ongoing conflict would bear the brunt of this crisis.

Aid organizations also indicated that the slow re-registration process has hindered their operations. Significant amounts of food, medical supplies, hygiene products, and shelter materials remain stranded outside Gaza, unable to be delivered due to what these groups describe as arbitrary restrictions.

Israel contends that it is fulfilling its obligations under the present ceasefire and aid agreement tied to U.S. President Donald Trump’s Gaza initiative. A precarious ceasefire commenced in October following two years of conflict involving Israel and Hamas. This agreement allowed for the release of hostages by Hamas, the liberation of Palestinian detainees by Israel, and an increase in aid into Gaza.

Nonetheless, aid agencies and Hamas assert that the influx of aid trucks into Gaza is considerably lower than what had been pledged. They further claim that numerous critical items remain obstructed. Israel, in response, has refuted these claims, asserting that sufficient aid is being facilitated in compliance with the truce’s terms.

The UN emphasized that it cannot substitute for the operations carried out by international humanitarian organizations if they are expelled. It cautioned that humanitarian aid must not be administered by entities that fail to adhere to neutral and independent aid principles.

In a strongly worded appeal, the joint statement insisted that humanitarian access should never be seen as optional or subject to political whims. It asserted that lifesaving assistance must reach Palestinian communities without further delay, warning that inadequate action could precipitate a complete collapse of humanitarian support in Gaza.
