Seventh Oil Tanker Linked to Venezuela Seized by US Forces

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The United States continues to ramp up its efforts to manage Venezuelan oil exports with the seizure of a seventh oil tanker. This latest action unfolded in the Caribbean, where US military personnel boarded and took charge of the vessel without facing any resistance.

The tanker, known as Motor Vessel Sagitta, was operating in defiance of US sanctions. According to the US Southern Command, it violated a quarantine for sanctioned vessels established by President Donald Trump. The operation was executed smoothly and resulted in no injuries or altercations.

This Liberian-flagged tanker, owned by a Hong Kong-based company, had stopped broadcasting its location over two months ago after departing northern Europe. US officials suspect that the vessel had loaded oil from Venezuela, despite the existing sanctions that restrict such activities.

Prior US sanctions affiliates with the vessel stem from regulations linked to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Authorities assert that this seizure underscores that oil shipped from Venezuela must be legally authorized and coordinated properly.

This incident is part of a broader strategy from the Trump administration post the ousting of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro earlier this month. The US has swiftly moved to exert control over Venezuela’s oil production, refining processes, and international sales. Officials maintain that this strategy is crucial for rejuvenating Venezuela’s beleaguered oil industry while stabilizing its economy.

President Trump has expressed that the US intends to market Venezuelan oil globally. He recently mentioned that the US has secured 50 million barrels from Venezuela and aims to sell even more, asserting that these sales are key to lowering global oil prices.

In the past weeks, US forces have captured several tankers near Venezuelan waters. For instance, the Bella 1 was seized after it altered its course in the Atlantic, indicating that US authorities are monitoring sanctioned vessels across expansive regions.

Proponents of this policy argue that the seizures are essential to curtailing illegal oil trading and preventing sanctioned organizations from generating revenue. They also contend that these moves could restore some order to Venezuela’s oil sector, which has suffered through years of inefficient management.

Conversely, critics caution that the seizure of foreign vessels may escalate tensions and lead to legal disputes. They argue that such actions could strain relations with other countries and shipping firms.

Currently, the Trump administration remains steadfast in its policy stance. This latest tanker seizure further emphasizes the central role of oil in US relations with Venezuela, signaling potential for additional actions in the near future.
