US Launches Significant Airstrikes on ISIS Following Attack on Troops

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The military of the United States has executed extensive airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) positions in Syria. This decision was taken in response to a lethal attack on American personnel early this month.

Military sources indicated that over 70 ISIS targets were targeted across central Syria, including ISIS fighters, munitions depots, and facilities utilized by the group for orchestrating attacks. The operation has been designated as Operation Hawkeye Strike.

This military action came in light of an attack on December 13 in the ancient city of Palmyra, where two US Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed during an assault on a convoy of American and Syrian forces. Additionally, three other US soldiers sustained injuries, and the attacker was subsequently neutralized by security forces.

Defending the action, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that this military operation served as a direct response to the loss of American lives, aiming to send a firm message to ISIS regarding the consequences of targeting US troops.

“This was a powerful response,” Hegseth noted. “Our targets were ISIS fighters, their arsenal, and their support networks.”

The comprehensive operation involved US fighter jets, attack helicopters, and long-range rocket systems, with Jordanian aircraft participating, demonstrating joint regional efforts against ISIS.

President Donald Trump acknowledged the strikes' effectiveness, indicating that they severely impaired ISIS networks. During a rally, he affirmed that the US dealt a significant blow to those responsible for attacks on coalition forces.

Trump also mentioned that the current Syrian government backed the US action against ISIS, emphasizing the strikes' role in safeguarding American forces and deterring future assaults.

US Central Command confirmed that the airstrikes were meticulously planned to minimize civilian casualties, focusing strictly on known ISIS sites in less populated areas.

The Syrian foreign ministry reiterated its commitment to eradicating ISIS and preventing the group from using its territory as a base. Syrian officials stated ongoing collaboration with the US-led coalition in combatting terrorism.

The Syrian Interior Ministry indicated that the attacker in Palmyra was suspected to have ISIS links, possibly receiving support from local security. Investigations continue.

Currently, about 1,000 US troops remain in Syria, primarily aiding efforts to prevent ISIS from regrouping after losing significant territory recently.

While ISIS has lost control of major land areas, the group continues to execute attacks through dispersed cells. US authorities warn that it remains a threat requiring vigilant scrutiny.

The latest offensive from the US demonstrates a strong commitment to safeguarding personnel and maintaining pressure on ISIS; however, officials acknowledge that the fight against this extremist group is ongoing.
