Mamady Doumbouya Claims Victory in Guinea's Presidential Polls

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Mamady Doumbouya, the military leader of Guinea, has officially been announced as the victor of the nation's presidential election, based on the provisional results shared by election officials. This pivotal event comes after a prolonged period of military governance that began when Doumbouya orchestrated a coup in 2021.

The former special forces commander secured an impressive 86.72% of the votes in the election held on December 28. This overwhelming majority obviates the need for a run-off, and, pending affirmation by the Supreme Court, Doumbouya is set to embark on a seven-year presidential term. The court has an eight-day window to assess and confirm the results, should any legal disputes arise.

Doumbouya gained power by ousting President Alpha Condé, who had been in control since 2010. Initially, Doumbouya had assured that he and other military officials would refrain from participating in future elections in an effort to transition to civilian rule. However, this commitment was later amended. A newly ratified constitution in a September referendum lifted the previous prohibition on junta leaders running for office, thereby enabling Doumbouya to enter the electoral race.

His triumph was largely anticipated, especially with many notable political figures, such as former president Condé and leading opposition figure Cellou Dalein Diallo, currently in exile. This situation left Doumbouya contending against eight lesser-known candidates, fragmenting the opposition vote. Election authorities claim a significant voter turnout of approximately 81%, although opposition factions raise doubts regarding this claim, particularly in light of low engagement levels observed in certain areas of the capital, Conakry.

Guinea’s vast natural resources significantly contribute to Doumbouya's support. The nation boasts the largest bauxite reserves globally and is home to the prominent Simandou iron ore project, which commenced operations last month following years of delays. Doumbouya has taken credit for advancing this project and implementing strategies designed to ensure greater state benefits from these resources. His administration has adopted a decisive stance against foreign mining companies, aligning with a growing trend of resource nationalism across West Africa.

Supporters argue that Doumbouya's age and firm grip on governance resonate with the country’s youthful demographic, as Guinea's median age stands at just 19 years. Conversely, critics express considerable apprehension regarding political liberties. Civil society organizations and opposition leaders contend that protests are suppressed, media outlets endure pressure, and political dissenters are frequently silenced.

The United Nations has echoed these concerns, with its human rights chief condemning the election campaign as severely restricted. Reports have surfaced detailing intimidation, forced disappearances, and limitations on press freedom. Opposition candidates have accused the government of widespread electoral fraud and claimed that independent observers were obstructed from monitoring the voting process.

As Guinea progresses, Doumbouya's election concludes one chapter of military rule, yet signals the onset of another fraught with challenges. While many Guineans aspire to achieve stability and economic advancement, others harbor fears that genuine democracy and open political discourse may remain elusive.
