Vietnam Accelerates Vital Energy Initiatives

Post by : Shakul

The Vietnamese government has initiated urgent measures to expedite the implementation of key energy and electricity projects as concerns grow about upcoming power shortages in the face of rising economic demands. Standing Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc convened a crucial meeting in Hanoi to assess progress on the revised National Power Development Plan VIII and other significant energy initiatives.

During the session, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc underscored the necessity of a stable electricity supply to meet Vietnam's ambitious economic growth objectives. He cautioned that delays in pivotal energy projects could jeopardize national energy security, impacting industrial growth, digital transformation, and advancements in high technology throughout the nation.

The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the rapidly rising demand for electricity driven by the expansion of manufacturing sectors, data center operations, scientific research facilities, and green energy solutions. He directed ministries, local authorities, and energy firms to promptly address barriers impeding project progress and ensure vital energy infrastructure is completed in a timely manner.

Reports shared at the meeting showed that several major power generation and transmission projects are currently lagging behind schedule. Officials from the Ministry of Industry and Trade warned that without prompt interventions, Vietnam could encounter electricity shortages between 2027 and 2030. They pointed out that challenges such as land clearance, complex investment procedures, and insufficient inter-agency coordination are contributing factors to project delays.

Minister of Industry and Trade Le Manh Hung stressed that energy security encompasses not just adequate electricity production but also reliable operations during emergencies while ensuring affordable electricity prices for the populace and businesses. The ministry recommended the expansion of renewable energy projects, the introduction of battery energy storage systems, offshore wind farms, and state-of-the-art coal-fired plants equipped with carbon capture technology.

Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc urged authorities to reassess all projects included in the national power development plan, eliminating those unlikely to meet timelines. He called for more robust oversight of investors and local governments responsible for delays, emphasizing that strict measures would be taken against those failing to comply with approved schedules.

The government also plans to introduce specialized mechanisms aimed at accelerating urgent energy projects, simplifying administrative processes, and prioritizing electricity transmission lines that can enhance power distribution and facilitate electricity imports when necessary. Authorities are to design flexible emergency strategies to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across all situations.

Pham Gia Tuc reaffirmed that Vietnam must not experience power shortages as the country strives for rapid economic growth and industrial modernization. He stated that the Ministry of Industry and Trade would assume direct responsibility for ensuring energy security and for the timely execution of major initiatives outlined in the revised Power Development Plan VIII.

The meeting concluded with an emphasis on enhanced cooperation among ministries, provinces, corporations, and investors to ensure more efficient progress across all national energy projects, contributing to Vietnam’s broader economic and sustainable development goals.
