Vietnam Hosts Japan's Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae for Official Visit

Post by : Shakul

On May 2, 2026, a formal ceremony at the Government headquarters in Hanoi marked the official welcome of Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae by Vietnam's Le Minh Hung. This visit occurs between May 1 and May 3, following invitations extended from the Vietnamese side.

Notably, Vietnam is the first Asian country Takaichi Sanae has visited since his re-election in February 2026, evidencing Japan's commitment to enhancing bilateral ties amidst a fresh era for both nations.

The ceremony radiated warmth, with children from Hanoi presenting flowers to the visiting dignitaries, setting a positive tone for the trip. The Prime Ministers then approached the honorary platform to begin the official proceedings.

National anthems were played by a military band as both leaders paid respects to their nations, underscoring the significance attributed to their diplomatic relationship.

Following the ceremony, a private meeting ensued between the two Prime Ministers, joined later by senior officials for high-level discussions centered on past cooperation and future collaborations across vital sectors.

The dialogues are anticipated to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, technology, and sustainable energy, while also focusing on green transformation, digital growth, food security, and scientific collaboration as key drivers for mutual progress.

Vietnam and Japan's relationship, cultivated over 50 years, is regarded as one of the most fruitful partnerships in the region, grounded in political trust and mutual respect. An upgrade to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023 has further solidified these ties.

Economic growth between the two countries is evident, with bilateral trade reaching approximately 52 billion US dollars in 2025, an increase from the previous year. Japan continues to be a leading investor in Vietnam through foreign direct investment and development initiatives.

The considerable Vietnamese community in Japan, now exceeding 680,000, plays a vital role in bridging connections between the two nations. This visit promises to uncover new opportunities and deepen collaborations, fostering peace, stability, and growth in the region.
