Vietnam Unveils 10 Key Technology Focus Areas

Post by : Shakul

Vietnam has taken a significant step by launching a national strategy centered around advanced technologies and future-oriented industries. Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung has endorsed Decision No. 21/2026/QD-TTg, which approves a new List of Strategic Technologies and Products set to commence on July 1, 2026. This initiative aims to enhance Vietnam's long-term economic viability and tech independence.

The Vietnamese government has pinpointed 10 strategic technology categories vital to the nation’s economic progression. These encompass cutting-edge digital domains such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, blockchain, big data, and the Internet of Things. Additional crucial sectors include next-gen mobile systems, robotics, automation, advanced biotechnology, semiconductor technology, cybersecurity, aerospace, and high-speed rail.

Officials reiterated that this strategy signifies Vietnam's ambition to emerge as a significant tech and digital economy leader in Southeast Asia. They maintain that rapid investments in these technologies will enhance industrial efficiency, bolster innovation, and lessen reliance on foreign tech, particularly in essential areas like cybersecurity and communications.

The decision outlines 30 distinct strategic technology products categorized into two groups. The first comprises products with robust market readiness, contributing directly to economic growth, such as AI models for Vietnamese language, cloud solutions, blockchain systems, industrial robots, smart manufacturing technologies, advanced vaccines, biosensor systems, and green hydrogen solutions.

The focus will increasingly be on digital transformation and modern industry enhancements. Vietnam plans to boost the development of AI-driven virtual helpers, cybersecurity frameworks for national critical infrastructure, as well as 5G equipment and intelligent healthcare innovations. Authorities expect these products to facilitate economic growth and advance national digital modernization.

The second category addresses forward-looking technologies vital for national security, including specialized semiconductors, quantum communication systems, quantum computing technologies, deep-sea exploration equipment, satellite networks, and small modular nuclear reactors. The government regards these innovations as pivotal for Vietnam’s enduring scientific autonomy.

High-speed and urban rail systems have also been identified as strategic technology focal points. The plan includes investing in rail-related infrastructure and transport systems to modernize national transportation networks which, in turn, will promote sustainable economic growth in key urban areas.

The Ministry of Science and Technology will be responsible for the ongoing review and update of the strategic technology lists, adapting to future economic and industrial shifts. Authorities affirm that the government is committed to continuously adjust policies in line with global tech trends and domestic demands, collaborating with other agencies to oversee implementation and propose necessary changes.

Vietnamese officials characterize this decision as a critical advance toward fostering a richer innovation ecosystem and amplifying Vietnam's significance within the global tech landscape. The strategy is set to attract investments, enhance research capabilities, and generate new economic ventures across sectors like AI, renewable energy, advanced healthcare, transportation, and digital infrastructure over the next few years.
