Vijay has made a significant political impact as his party claimed the title of the largest political group in the Tamil Nadu elections. The actor-turned-politician's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, won 108 seats out of 234 in the state assembly, marking a remarkable inaugural political turn for Vijay after resigning from his film career last year.
As reported by India’s Election Commission, Vijay won both constituencies he contested in: Tiruchi East and Perambur. Despite emerging as the key political force, the party still has 10 seats to go before achieving the requisite 118 for a simple majority. Political experts are anticipating coalition talks as Vijay seeks partnerships with other parties to form a government.
The election results have sparked tremendous interest since Vijay only established Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in February 2024. Known widely as one of India’s highest-grossing actors, he exited the film industry after his last film, Jana Nayagan, in 2025, leaving fans and critics alike surprised at his full commitment to politics.
Vijay's political path included hurdles, such as a tragic stampede during a rally last October, alongside various public challenges throughout his campaign. Nonetheless, he garnered significant public backing as his fan base remained steadfast during the elections.
The incumbent Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured 59 seats while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam claimed 47. These results have transformed the political landscape in Tamil Nadu, showcasing Vijay’s party as a formidable contender.
The excitement over Vijay’s victory transcended borders, reaching Malaysia where he enjoys a loyal following. In cities like Kuala Lumpur and George Town, fans celebrated at Tea Kadai outlets, offering complimentary tea to patrons displaying congratulatory banners for Vijay.
Mohamed Rizwan Abdul Ghafoor Khan, co-founder of Tea Kadai, expressed that the festivities were in honor of Vijay with about 400 complimentary cups of tea served from evening till midnight. Videos of the celebrations gained traction on social media, connecting fans from both nations.
Vijay has long had ties with Malaysia, where several of his hits, such as Kuruvi and Kaavalan, have been filmed. His connection with Malaysian Tamil fans has remained exceptional, making their celebrations particularly special.
His recent farewell concert, Thalapathy Thiruvizha, in December saw nearly 80,000 fans at Bukit Jalil National Stadium, setting a record for celebrity attendance in Malaysia. With his latest political victory, many believe Vijay is transitioning into a significant political figure in Tamil Nadu alongside his acting legacy.
