Angolan Villagers Transform from Hunters to Guardians of Sea Turtles

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

In the peaceful village of Hojiua in Angola, a remarkable shift is underway. Individuals who once hunted sea turtles for sustenance are transitioning to guardians of these marine creatures. Notably, 45-year-old Joaquim Avelino Fragoso, a father of seven who previously hunted turtles for their meat, now dedicates his time to patrolling the Longa estuary to protect these endangered animals.

Fragoso expresses his newfound happiness as he witnesses turtles nesting on the beach and then returning to the sea. This transformation stems from the Kitabanga Project, a significant conservation initiative aimed at training locals to safeguard sea turtles along Angola's extensive 1,600 km coastline.

Over 70 villagers have embarked on this journey. Collectively, they contribute to protecting approximately 25,000 turtle nests, making substantial gains for struggling species.

All five species of eastern Atlantic sea turtles—ranging from the olive ridley to the giant leatherback—can be found in Angolan waters, many of which are designated as vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered by the IUCN. The Longa beaches, characterized by their soft caramel sands, serve as crucial nesting areas.

The initiative is backed by private entities and operated by the Kissama Foundation along with Angola's oldest institution, Universidade Agostinho Neto. Their mission is not only to preserve turtles but also to provide the local community with skills and opportunities for the future.

For years, hunting was prevalent due to economic hardships faced by villagers, where turtle meat was a vital income source with few alternatives. Conservation worker Debora Carvalho, regional coordinator for the Kitabanga Project, emphasizes that aiding local residents entails more than simply discouraging hunting; it involves presenting tangible economic incentives through education and training.

She shares that initial resistance to conservation is common, but as villagers learn how wildlife protection can lead to job creation, tourism, and environmental preservation, they start to envision new possibilities. Carvalho and her team illustrate how embracing conservation can enhance their quality of life.

Fragoso exemplifies this transformation, recognizing that harming turtles threatens future generations. “We need to protect them so there will be more turtles tomorrow,” he proudly states.

The triumph in Hojiua offers optimism to conservationists nationwide. A community previously engaged in hunting now stands as defenders of a time-honored species of the ocean. Their endeavors demonstrate that with appropriate backing, even at-risk wildlife can be secured, while simultaneously empowering the individuals dedicated to their protection.
