Dubai Police Sound Alarm Over Holiday Home Rental Scam After AED 8,000 Loss

Dubai Police Sound Alarm Over Holiday Home Rental Scam After AED 8,000 Loss

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a significant warning, Dubai Police have highlighted a troubling surge in holiday home rental scams in the city after one individual was scammed out of AED 8,000 while attempting to book a chalet online. This situation raises alarm as reports of fraud sharply rise during the holiday season in Dubai.

The victim reported discovering an online listing for a holiday chalet, where he was persuaded to pay both a deposit and an insurance fee. After transferring AED 8,000 to confirm the booking, the fraudster disappeared by turning off his phone, leaving the victim stranded. The man subsequently reported the incident to local authorities.

Dubai Police stated that perpetrators commonly exploit individuals seeking holiday deals by using enticing images, low prices, and urgent communications to pressure them into hasty payments without thorough verification of the properties. Many victims only realize they have been defrauded after they have sent funds.

Officials noted that scammers thrive during the holidays when demand for short-term rentals peaks. They cautioned that offers that appear “too good to be true” are frequently fraudulent. It is recommended that people exercise caution when interacting with unknown advertisers on both social media and various online platforms.

Residents are urged to always verify property information, confirm the identity of property owners, and visit locations before making any payments. The importance of utilizing official rental services and formal agreements to safeguard against fraud has been emphasized.

The authorities are actively promoting awareness initiatives through the “Be Aware of Fraud” campaign, and residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities through applicable official channels, including the e-Crime platform or by dialling 901. This warning from Dubai Police regarding holiday home rental scams aims to safeguard residents and minimize online fraud incidents throughout the city.
