WhatsApp has unveiled a dedicated Apple Watch companion app compatible with Series 4 and later models. The update allows users to receive alerts, open complete messages and record or send voice notes directly from their watch without requiring an iPhone nearby.
The release continues WhatsApp's push into Apple's hardware ecosystem. Earlier this year the company introduced a native iPad app, moving beyond the prior web-only tablet experience.
Key Features of the Apple Watch App
The new watch app includes several frequently requested tools:
Full message view: Long texts can be read in full on the wrist.
Voice messages: Users can record and transmit voice notes from the watch itself.
Emoji reactions: Reply to messages using the familiar emoji reactions available on mobile.
Improved media display: Images and stickers are shown more clearly on the watch screen.
Chat history access: Previous conversations can be scrolled through directly on the device.
All communications remain protected by end-to-end encryption, matching the privacy standards WhatsApp applies on phones and its web client.
What’s Missing
Despite its expanded capabilities, the watch app currently omits some features: it does not support voice or video calls, cannot initiate new chats and does not display status updates. By comparison, some rivals offer only very basic watch support and lack full chat logs or robust media viewing.
A Step Toward Seamless Messaging
With WhatsApp on the Apple Watch, notifications and quick replies are now available at a glance. The update reflects a wider move toward wearable-first design, giving users more ways to stay connected without constantly reaching for their phones.
