World FZO Congress 2026 in Panama: Advancing Free Zones Development

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The 12th annual Congress organized by the World Free Zones Organization took place in Panama City, themed “Free Zones in the New Global Operational Model: Challenges and Opportunities.” The focus was on how economic zones can facilitate trade, industrial expansion, and global integration.

Inaugurated by José Raúl Mulino alongside Luis Abinader and Dr. Mohammed Al Zarooni, Chairman of the World FZO, the event attracted 27 ministers and over 2,000 participants from more than 70 nations, including CEOs, experts, and representatives from international organizations.

President José Raúl Mulino emphasized the importance of free zones in enhancing economic freedom, boosting global trade, and fostering national growth, highlighting that investment is crucial for economic advancement and increased purchasing power.

Dr. Mohammed Al Zarooni identified Panama as a strategic hub for the Americas and a vital player in global trade and investment. He pointed out that shifts in geopolitics, technology, and regulatory landscapes underline the growing significance of free zones.

He elaborated on the impact of artificial intelligence in transforming customs procedures, logistics, compliance systems, and investor services. Addressing sustainability, he remarked that free zones have the potential to support green industries and sustainable production practices.

Dr. Al Zarooni further indicated that governments are increasingly viewing free zones as pivotal assets for stimulating innovation and sustainable growth rather than merely regulatory frameworks.

New Caribbean Economic Zones Initiative

During the Congress, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed to establish the Caribbean Special Economic Zones Regional Association, aimed at enhancing collaboration among Caribbean nations and fostering shared standards to bolster trade and investment.

Launch of One Zone Digital Platform

The World FZO unveiled an expansion of its “One Zone” platform, which includes a newly launched website and member portal designed to offer certification services, training, advisory support, and performance benchmarks for improving global connectivity among free zones.

Leadership Training Initiative

In collaboration with INCAE Business School, the Congress introduced an Executive Leadership Programme aimed at free zone leaders, granting digital certificates to around 700 participants for the first time in the history of the Congress.

Tourism Economic Zones Research Study

A joint white paper by the World FZO and the United Nations Tourism Organization was also presented, investigating Tourism Special Economic Zones and their potential role in future investment strategies through global case studies and insights.

The findings reveal the increasing integration of tourism and economic zones, proposing new frameworks for sustainable development and investment planning on a worldwide scale.
