In a significant move, Xi Jinping convened with Taiwan’s opposition leader Cheng Li-wun in Beijing, marking over a decade since a similar encounter amid rising cross-strait strains.
Held at the Great Hall of the People, the meeting highlighted both leaders' commitment to ensuring peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, a self-ruled territory claimed by China.
During their dialogue, both sides expressed a mutual desire for peaceful relations and avoided conflict. Xi pointed to the inevitability of tightening bonds between the populations of both sides, while Cheng emphasized the need for mutual respect against differing political ideologies.
This discussion occurs amid heightened military activities near Taiwan, with China deploying warships and jets in the vicinity. Nevertheless, both leaders reiterated their dedication to maintaining dialogue and stability.
Cheng included visits to Shanghai and Nanjing prior to her arrival in Beijing, positioning herself as a advocate for peaceful engagements and a proponent of diplomatic solutions to ease tensions.
The meeting also explored economic and global matters, including Taiwan’s potential role in regional trade agreements. Analysts suggest these discussions could pave the way for informal communication pathways between the parties.
However, this visit has ignited discussions in Taiwan as the current administration continues to prioritize defense and caution against compromising sovereignty.
Experts believe this meeting holds strategic importance for China, suggesting an approach to steer cross-strait relations through political dialogue while sustaining its broader geopolitical objectives.
