Cheng Lei, an Australian journalist, is reshaping her life after nearly three years in a Chinese prison, channeling her painful ordeal into a memoir and a stage play that spotlight the realities of China's justice system.
Originally from China, Cheng was detained in Beijing in 2020 while working as a television anchor for CCTV and faced accusations of leaking state secrets, which culminated in her conviction and imprisonment.
Since her release and deportation to Australia in October 2023, Cheng has begun to share her experiences publicly. She authored a memoir and produced a stage play named “1154 Days,” which represents the actual duration of her incarceration in China.
The upcoming play in Melbourne delves into the emotional toll of isolation, continuous surveillance, and life in China's clandestine prison environment. Cheng remarked that these trials compelled her to redefine her identity after losing aspects of her former self.
The initial six months under China's Residential Surveillance at a Designated Location (RSDL) stood out as the most harrowing period of her imprisonment, characterized by solitude, silence, limited mobility, and relentless monitoring.
Cheng reflects on becoming a casualty of the escalating political discord between Australia and China, particularly following Australia's inquiries into COVID-19's origins. Australia subsequently cautioned its citizens regarding the risks of arbitrary detention in China against the backdrop of declining diplomatic relations.
Now residing in Melbourne with her family, Cheng has re-entered the journalism field as a television presenter and columnist. In a surprising twist, she has also ventured into stand-up comedy, claiming that humor was crucial in her coping mechanism during her time in prison.
Beyond her narrative, Cheng feels a duty to advocate for prisoners and activists still silenced in China, echoing their untold stories.
Her case continues to garner worldwide attention amidst ongoing discussions about human rights, freedom of the press, and the delicate diplomatic balance between China and Western nations.
