Strict Drug Testing for Bus Drivers in Thailand

Strict Drug Testing for Bus Drivers in Thailand

Post by : Shakul

In a significant move to enhance transit safety, Thailand’s Transport Company Limited (BKS) has implemented enhanced drug testing protocols for public bus drivers. This initiative arises from new safety regulations set forth by Deputy Minister of Transport, Siripong Angkasakulkiat.

The enforcement took place at the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak), popularly known as Mochit 2. Here, authorities tested bus drivers from BKS and affiliated transport firms prior to their service commencement for passengers.

BKS Managing Director Atthawit Rakchamroon stated that this action is aligned with the Ministry of Transport’s comprehensive strategy to fortify public trust in long-distance bus travel and elevate overall safety standards in transportation.

During the inspection, nearly 100 drivers underwent testing, and none tested positive for illegal substances. The outcomes of these tests were duly documented in vehicle logbooks as part of ongoing safety monitoring processes.

Officials confirmed that any driver identified with illegal drugs would face immediate suspension from their responsibilities. Their samples will subsequently be sent to the Department of Medical Sciences for verification before any disciplinary measures are enacted against the employee and the relevant transport operator.

The Ministry of Transport makes it clear that all drivers in public transport must be entirely free of alcohol and drugs to safeguard passenger well-being. Routine inspections and urine tests will persist at major bus terminals in Bangkok, including Mochit 2, Ekkamai, Southern Bus Terminal, Pinklao Bus Terminal, and the Mini Bus Terminal.

Safety inspections will be even more stringent during peak travel seasons such as the New Year and Songkran holidays, when millions embark on journeys across the nation. The government aims that these intensified measures will minimize road incidents and bolster public confidence in Thailand’s transport system.
